The Truman Brewery site has been in commercial use for over 350 years. The Truman Brewery was founded in 1666 by Joseph Truman and grew over time, in particular through the efforts of Benjamin Truman in the 18th Century. By 1873 it was the largest brewery in the world. The site was closed and brewing ceased in 1989 after which the site fell into a largely derelict state.
Over close to 30 years the Truman Brewery site has been organically and sensitively regenerated and put back into use, continuing its long history of commercial use. Through these efforts the site has again become a successful commercial hub but, now also a cultural hub. It is home to many creative businesses, independent shops, exhibition and event spaces, markets, bars, cafes and restaurants. However, large areas of the site are failing to meet their full potential and the benefits this could bring to the local area and wider Borough.
